The Benefits of Membership

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT:

These are new services designed in response to members' requests for more professional development activities.  Below are the workshop topics for 2010.  All these sessions will be delivered via Live Meeting and some will also be offered on-site.

@Work with Four Generations:

This workshop helps participants understand why people older and younger than themselves have different value systems, and how a generational gap influences attitudes and behaviours.  The session will examine strategies to more effectively connect with staff, colleagues and clients - of all ages.

Resiliency @ Work:

Times continue to be challenging in government with no foreseeable "break" on the horizon.  Do you know how to marshal your own resilience so that you can thrive despite the negative swirl around you?  This session will introduce you to the basics of what comprises resiliency and how we can best react to adversity at work.

Reframe Your Thinking:

This workshop will help you step out of your usual patterns of thinking as you tackle organizational change, solve complex problems or manage projects and initiatives.  Learn how to use a multiple perspective, systems approach to increase your chances of success when addressing challenging situations within your organization.

Managing Up:

Do you have trouble getting attention from your superiors?  Or do you find yourself getting too much of their attention?  Do you go into a meeting with your senior management team only to find that your item goes sideways or drops off the table?  Learn how to effectively manage up.

Managing from a Distance:

Are you finding it difficult to effectively manage a distributed staff group?  Learn some best practices that can be used when direct reports are in different locations, including effective communication and interaction approaches.

Orientation to Managing Others:

Have you recently become an excluded manager?  What is involved with this shift?  Learn how the role of an excluded manager differs from that of an included supervisor and how to best prepare for this challenge.

STRATEGIC ADVICE & SUPPORT:

Members call upon us for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes you just want a sounding board or someone you can trust to talk through an issue.  There are also instances such as receiving a severance notice or being subjected to a significant change in your employment situation where an independent, "second set of eyes," opinion is helpful.  You may face a serious situation including a disciplinary process where we may accompany you via phone or in-person to a meeting.  Perhaps you want to review a job application or get a bit of coaching prior to an interview.  No matter what circumstances you face, we are in your corner and will do our best to support you.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES:

We know that some decisions you face require professional advice.  If you have held BCEEA membership for six months or more, you are eligible for the following services:

  • Legal Services:  $500 maximum reimbursement
  • Pension Advisory Services:  up to two sessions

ADVOCACY:

The BCEEA continues to represent the interests of excluded employees where systemic issues emerge related to conditions of employment.  The BCEEA will research and document issues and initiate discussions with relevant decision-makers, including the BC PSA, Deputy Minister to the Premier and individual Deputy Ministers and Assistant Deputy Ministers - with the aim of finding and implementing solutions that strengthen the conditions of employment for excluded employees.
