Since 2001, Sandra has promoted health and wellness programming in her workplace. She developed a website where employees across the province can access health information and resources, join health and wellness teams, and earn prizes for healthy living choices such as annual health and dental check-ups, quitting smoking, exercising, and weight loss. She also established a system of health and wellness teams to provide support for people embarking on these kinds of lifestyle changes. Today there are 25 teams, and more than 200 participants from 9 ministries, located all over BC.
One of Sandra’s recent recruits as team leader, Mary Ann Pyrczak, Customer Service Representative, LCS (Williams Lake) was one of her nominators. She says “From my first contact with her about volunteering as a team leader, she has been extremely helpful and encouraging. No question is too silly, as she frequently points out!”
Fellow nominator, Deborah Lipscombe, Regional Director, Interior Northeast, Labour and Citizens’ Services, Kamloops says, “Sandra has been the true backbone of the Service BC Health and Wellness program for the last 7 years,” “She has worked countless hours to ensure the program inspires people at all levels of the organization, across government and the province. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
The BCEEA established its Health and Wellness Promotion Award three years ago to recognize provincial government employees or organizations who are leaders in improving individual and workplace health. “Sandra is a wonderful example of how personal commitment and leadership can make a real difference,” says David Day, BCEEA Executive Director, “Despite a personal battle with a life-threatening health challenge, she inspires others with her positive attitude and sense of humour. We’re proud to recognize her significant contribution to good health, with this award.”
In addition to her award certificate and a ‘pass around’ plaque that she will keep until next year’s award ceremony, Sandra received a $200 donation to the charity of her choice – the Canadian Cancer Society, through the Stewart/Terrace Provincial Employees Community Services Fund.
